Can Baking Soda Whiten Teeth?

Teeth WhiteningThe simple answer is yes, baking soda does indeed work as a teeth whitener. In fact not only does baking soda whiten teeth but it actually cleans them as well. Baking soda was used as a teeth cleaning agent from the 18th century all the way up to the advent of modern toothpastes.

When dissolved in water baking soda whitens (and cleans) teeth by effectively scraping off the yellow and brown stains that form with age and wear. The free radicals from the water dissolved baking soda penetrate the teeth’s enamel and lighten the stains from a yellow or brown to give a much whiter appearance.

Teeth Whitening With Baking Soda

The most successful method of teeth whitening with baking soda is really quite easy.
  • Take a small glass and fill with a teaspoon of baking soda.
  • Add a pinch of salt.
  • Dissolve the mixture with water into a paste.
  • Brush your teeth like you would normally.
  • Rinse your mouth out well with water.
If you feel a tingling sensation while whitening your teeth with baking soda, don’t worry as this is normal.

Take Caution

You should only use this formula to whiten your teeth once every two weeks as baking soda is quite abrasive and can damage your tooth enamel if used too often. Baking soda can also dissolve orthodontic glue so please don’t try this teeth whitening method if you have a permanent retainer or wear braces.

For The Whitest Teeth

Brushing your teeth with baking soda will make your teeth slightly whiter, but it is certainly not the be-all and end-all when it comes to teeth whitening. Instead you should treat baking soda as more of a maintenance tool, to keep your teeth looking their best. If you couple this with one of the many great teeth whitening products available you can have a truly dazzling smile.

I literally JUST finished brushing with baking soda. Let's just say, you'd think I put on white strips for a couple of weeks or something.

You just mix until it has the consistency of toothpaste, I actually used a variation, mixed with hydrogen peroxide instead of water. I'm sure either case it should work. Normal brushing, I'd say give it a good brush, aim for a good minute or two, and rinse.

It's also a good idea, if you decide to try to hydro to brush with normal toothpaste after, because the mixture leaves a real bad taste. You'll see your teeth whiter with ONE brushing. =D

It just means mix the baking soda/salt into water until it becomes a paste.

@mane619 "Dissolve the mixture with water into a paste" means get a little bit of baking soda and put water into it until it has about the same consistency as toothpaste.

Okay, so I found this whilst looking online for home remedies. I was curious to see what ideas there were out there. Luckily I had Baking soda, (I only just used it 2 weeks ago to strip hair dye out of my hair) so I did try this literally 10 minutes ago. I can definitely see a difference, not a dramatic change but much cleaner and lightened. Thank you! :)
