For those who regularly read the articles on this site you should be in no doubt of what I mean when I say teeth whitening. But for those new readers I will give you a brief, and basic description. Teeth whitening is a popular manner of reducing and removing yellow teeth stains - and then improving the shading of the teeth to give them a much whiter look.So what is professional teeth whitening then? Well while some people prefer to use home based methods of teeth whitening such as gels and strips, professional teeth whitening is done by your dentist. While quite a recent phenomenon dentists have been quick to catch onto the popularity of teeth whitening and now the vast majority offer this service. Typically professional teeth whitening is done by one of two methods, laser whitening or veneers.
Laser whitening is the most popular of these two options mainly due to the wide difference in cost. While a full set of veneers will cost upwards of $20,000 most dentists now offer laser whitening for around $1,000. While the two methods are very different the results are almost the same. The shade of whiteness gained will be more or less the same, the advantage that veneers have is that they can also be used to straighten your teeth and fix any cosmetic flaws.
What should you do then if you want your teeth professionally whitened? The best thing to do is to arrange an appointment with your dentist and tell them you would like to have your teeth whitened. They will then assess your teeth to see whether they are suitable for this treatment (99% of the time you are good to go).
Ask what methods the dentist offers and ask them to explain each one to you, and then you can make a fully informed decision. This may seem obvious but it is important to ask because you need to know the pricing, and exactly how long each procedure will take. Laser treatment can take 2-3 30 minute appointments while veneers may take an hour to map your teeth and then weeks longer to create the actual veneers. They should then be fitted within one session.
