Look at a smokers' fingers and look at their teeth and nearly always they are stained. You could keep repeatedly buying teeth whitening products that will temporarily undo some of the damage, or you could get to the bottom of the issue once and for all.

If you are a smoker, then quitting smoking will significantly reduce your teeth staining. Exposing your teeth 20 or 30 times per day to that tar filled smoke can only lead to constant and gradual staining. If you smoke 20 cigarettes per day then that is 7300 teeth staining sessions you will receive in just one year. That's a lot of work to undo.

We all know that quitting smoking is easier said than done, but there is some help out there. We recently stumbled upon a new quit smoking product by HypnoBusters, called Quit Smoking Hypnotherapy. This is a 5 session audio pack plus an eBook. The sessions are as follows...

Get Ready To Quit Smoking MP3 - This session will help to prepare your mind for the task of quitting smoking.
Quit Smoking Right Now MP3 - This is the main session of the pack. With repeated listening you won't want to smoke ever again.
When You Have Cravings MP3 - Should you feel any cravings listen to this and they will soon disappear.
Smoking Is Disgusting MP3 - Listening to this session will make you associate smoking with things that you find repulsive.
If You Slipped And Smoked MP3 - If you couldn't help but have a cigarette this session will put you back on the right track.

As you can see, this pack covers every eventuality. They help you before, during, and after you have quit. The aim of this pack is to help you quit smoking and stay that way. We also received 4 free e-books, 3 were about quitting smoking, and 1 was about eliminating stress from your life – all very useful.

I bought this pack for my sister, who has been a regular smoker for the past 18 years. In exchange for buying this for her, I asked her to take down a diary of what she did then I could share the results with you.

First Day
My sister listened to the first session (Get Ready To Quit Smoking), straight away. This was just to get her in the right frame of mind for quitting smoking. She seemed to enjoy it, and listened to it again later on in the day. She then felt ready to quit smoking.

Second Day
First thing the next morning she listened to the second session “Quit Smoking Right Now”. At the end of this session she had to stop smoking – it was decided definitely. She admits that she had a last cigarette just before listening to this!

Surprisingly she found it easy for most of the rest of the day to not smoke. It was only after her evening meal did she even think about it. She said that she nearly decided to listen the the third session “When You Have Cravings”, but though she would save it for when she really needed it.

Third Day
The next day she woke up feeling great. She said that already she felt like a proper non-smoker. She felt bright, breezy and energetic. However again after her evening meal she had a little slump. This time she did listen to the third session “When You Have Cravings”, and said that immediately she felt better.

Fourth Day
She reported that she felt great all day, and barely even though about smoking, apart from briefly after meals.

Fifth Day
Still everything was fine, and it was getting even easier to remain a non smoker.

It has been a month now, and she still hasn’t smoked – not even once. She says that she feels better knowing that she has the sessions to fall back on, should she need them. My sister has only used 3 of the 5 sessions so far, and she is slowly working her way through the eBooks. She has saved an estimated $180 from not smoking so far, which is more than the quit smoking pack costs to buy. But most importantly she now fully considers herself to be a non smoker, to the point where she almost cannot believe that she has ever smoked.

If you want to quit smoking for good, then I *HIGHLY* recommend you try Quit Smoking Hypnotherapy. It is a new hypnosis technique that seeks to convince your mind that you have been through a real gastric band surgical procedure. The advantages are...

You don't need to go through with intrusive and potentially harmful surgery.

It is a lot cheaper than surgery.

You don't need to take time off work for recovery.

You can do it from the comfort of your own home.

You may be thinking what has a weight loss product got to do with teeth whitening? Well admittedly the link is a little tenuous, but I am including a review here because it is such a great product and eating less does reduce plaque and damage to your teeth.

I tried gastric band hypnotherapy in order to lose some weight for my holidays. I had basically given myself 1 month to get into shape, which I know is a little last minute but better than nothing.

The product is available in mp3 download format. It comes with 4 sessions plus an e-book. At the time of writing it also comes with 2 bonus hypnosis sessions from the well known HypnoBusters website. I checked out the hypnotherapist who made this product, Jon Rhodes, and found that he a good reputation online. You should do this before buying any product online.

After listening to the sessions I didn't really feel all that different. At least that is what I thought. I remember thinking that the effects might kick in after a few days. I talked to my wife about this and she looked at me with a quizzical look.

“What?” I asked innocently.

“Have you not noticed?” she responded.

“Noticed what?” I asked.

“You haven't been eating as much the past few days.”

She was right. I had still been eating my meals, but not always finishing them, and I hadn't been eating between meals. I just forgot. It didn't register. I didn't notice that I no longer ate between meals because it was not an issue. I wasn't trying. It just happened.

After doing a quick calculation/estimation, I reckoned I was saving around 500 calories per day. It might not sound much, but every day that adds up to 3500 calories per week. I think a male is only supposed to eat around 2500 calories per day, so it's about a day and a half’s worth of calories per week I am now saving.

After 4 weeks I lost 6 pounds without even trying. I did no extra exercise (although I had planned on doing) and didn't really try to eat less – it just happened. Whilst this isn't earth shattering progress I was very happy with it. Especially as it required no pain or heartache to achieve.

Also my teeth do actually look a little better. It's not surprising really. When eating between meals you don't give them much chance to recover the acid levels from the last time you ate. With all the best intention in the world, it is not easy to brush and floss after every single thing you eat all day. Not when snacking all day.

So if you want to help your teeth and your waist line, I would strongly recommend you try Gastric Band Hypnotherapy. I can only speak for myself, but I found it a very easy way to reduce my eating without any tears or hunger pangs. However smoking is also an enemy to all those who want shiny white healthy teeth. There are many ways smoking negatively effects the teeth.

Just like the fingers can be stained by nicotine constantly being passed through them, the teeth can also pick up lasting stains from cigarette smoking. We are regularly reminded of the dangers of smoking to our lungs and general health, but people often forget the damage that smoking can cause to our teeth.

As well as staining the teeth, smoking also significantly damages the gums and the bones that support the teeth. Dentists agree that smoking is one of the major causes of premature tooth loss.

Smoking aids the accumulation of plaque on teeth, which ultimately leads to tooth decay. The chemicals found in cigarettes such as nicotine and tar stick to the teeth, gums, and other places in the mouth, encouraging more plaque to stick around. This is also why smokers often suffer from bad breath.

Saliva in the mouth contains components that actively attack bacteria that causes tooth decay. Saliva is also rich in calcium and phosphates that help to re-mineralize the enamel of the teeth. However smoking dries the mouth allowing more bacteria to flourish. With a reduced flow of saliva, bacteria can quickly accumulate and cause problems to the teeth.

Smoking also decreases the blood flow to the gums, so the early signs of gum disease, such as bleeding gums, are not always spotted until it is too late. Smoking drastically reduces the amount of vitamin C in the body, which is needed to help keep your gums healthy.

Perhaps even more worrying is the fact that smoking significantly increases your chances of obtaining oral cancer. Smoking is the number one cause for oral cancer, and smokers are about 18 times more likely to get oral cancer than non smokers. Not only could you lose all your teeth, you could also lose your life.

Of course we understand that quitting smoking is not always straight forward. Many people have repeated the ritual of smoking many times every day for many years. Smoking is a ritual that is firmly embedded in many people's brains.

That is why we recommend this Stop Smoking Hypnosis MP3. Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic application of hypnosis, and has nothing to do with the wild stage antics that you may have heard about.

Hypnotherapy is a safe yet effective tool to help relax your conscious mind, in order to better access your subconscious mind. There is no loss of control – it is actually a very similar feeling to meditation, or zoning out to a good book or TV program.

It is important to access our subconscious mind in order to make a change in our behavior, as that is where our automatic habits and urges come from. A person who fears spiders often knows on a conscious level that they are harmless, but their subconscious mind doesn't know this, and will automatically trigger a fear response in an attempt to 'save' you. You need to tell your subconscious mind, not your conscious mind, that small spiders are safe. Hypnotherapy can do this quickly and efficiently.

It is very common for people, who began to smoke in their teens, to still subconsciously think that it is cool to smoke. Being older they have usually learned that this is not the case on a conscious level. However their subconscious mind still doesn't yet know this. Years of advertising and peer pressure can drum into your mind that it is good to smoke. Hypnotherapy can literally reprogram the subconscious mind and tell it there are no benefits to smoking.

We highly recommend the quit smoking hypnosis audio program created at HypnoBusters.com. It is a very affordable, yet highly effective session, and has a 90 day money back guarantee. The session is available for immediate download, so you can buy it now and put it to use straight away.

If you are interested in helping your teeth by quitting smoking, then you should act now. The longer you leave it, the more damage is being done. There is never a perfect time to quit smoking, so it might as well be right now!

If you want to help your teeth, and your overall health by quitting smoking, then visit the following link for more information on HYPNOSIS FOR QUITTING SMOKING.

Safest Way to Whiten Teeth

One of the most important things to consider when considering any cosmetic procedure is safety. If you use an unsafe method then the actual results may be very different from the expected results. This is why I get many people asking me about the safest way to whiten teeth.

Well the safest way to whiten your teeth is also one of the more expensive ways, and that is by purchasing a set of veneers. Veneers are like little white sheets that cover your teeth and are applied by a fully qualified dentist. However a full set will typically cost $20,000 and this is outside the range of most people’s budget.

A more affordable alternative is laser teeth whitening. Again this is performed by an experienced dentists so you know you are in safe hands. Laser whitening involves having a bleaching agent placed in a try that fits around your mouth. A laser is then used to speed up the process of your teeth absorbing the bleach and becoming several shades whiter. This usually only takes one session or two and costs around $500 which is still quite expensive but the results do last a long time, around ten years and possibly even longer if you maintain your teeth well.

Home whitening kits are usually quite safe but because you do them yourself there is always room for human error such as leaving the tray in too long. Plus, without the laser, your teeth have to be exposed to the bleaching agent for much longer - thirty days rather than one or two like with laser whitening. However it is cheaper, you can get a home teeth whitening kit for a little under $100.

So there are the safest ways to whiten your teeth. I would recommend using the most expensive method you can afford, as with cosmetics you generally get what you pay for.

The Effects of Nail Biting on Teeth

Nail biting is a very common bad habit, but many people don’t realize the damage it can cause. In this piece we will look at the effects of nail biting on teeth and gums, as well as how to quit.

Perhaps the worst effect of nail biting on teeth is the fact that it can cause teeth to chip or break. Nails are tough and hard, so when you bite down on them you are causing excess stress to your teeth. Over time this weakens them and can eventually result in a tooth chipping or breaking.

Nail biting also causes stress to the gums, as well as the risk of bitten nails tearing into the gum tissue. This causes further weakening to the teeth.

Finally there is a lot of bacteria packed under the nails. When you bite them this bacteria is going directly into your mouth which can lead to both illnesses and gum infections.

As you can imagine all these problems that nail biting can cause are expensive to fix which is why it’s important to beat the habit as quickly as you possibly can.

If you would like help to quit nail biting then we recommend this Nail Biting Hypnosis MP3. It costs just $9.95 and comes with a 90 day money back guarantee.

Hypnosis facilitates subconscious change which makes quitting any habit a lot easier. It has been found in clinical trials to be the best, and safest, way to quit nail biting.

Does Dental Insurance Pay For Teeth Whitening?

After I wrote about dental insurance last month I received a few emails asking me if dental insurance will pay for teeth whitening.

Despite the fact that studies have shown that white teeth have a positive effect on confidence and mental wellbeing, teeth whitening is not covered by dental insurance as it is seen as purely cosmetic and therefore non-essential. Generally dental insurance only covers payments for issues that cause physical pain and discomfort, or at least have the potential to do so.

It is quite understandable why a dental insurance program wouldn’t pay for teeth whitening as it is a costly procedure and would drive insurance premiums sky high.

So if you’re considering having teeth whitening done by a dentist then you will most likely have to cover the cost yourself. The only real alternative to this would be to buy a home whitening kit.

Personal Dental Insurance Selection

Personal dental insurance is an insurance plan that covers the cost of dental work on an individual person. It is always a good idea to pay for the best dental insurance you can afford as you never know when you might need an expensive treatment that you otherwise could not afford. A simple work or sports accident could leave you with dental bills costing literally thousands of dollars.

With all the options out there it can be difficult to decide on which is the right personal dental insurance plan for you. However this can be made much easier just by examining three of the major decisions you have to make in selecting your insurance plan, and which one suits you best.

1. Full coverage or maintenance and protection? As the names of both these plans suggest the former offers full coverage, payment for all non-cosmetic treatments, while the latter only offers coverage for more basic dental treatment. Obviously full coverage invariably costs more.

2. Regular dental insurance or discount plan? Regular dental insurance will fully cover the costs of any treatment you will require, while discount plans only net you a certain % discount off your treatment. Again the first option costs more than the second.

3. Coverage limits. Your coverage limit dictates the highest cost of treatment your personal dental insurance plan will pay for. The higher the limit you set, the more your insurance will cost, however you will be better protected against any major dental emergencies.

Once you have figured out which type of personal dental insurance plan you desire you can then start looking for the best providers.

Tooth Sensitivity After Whitening

Tooth sensitivity after whitening is one of the most common problems for someone who has recently whitened this teeth. Usually this is the result of the chemical reaction caused by some whitening kits in the enamel of teeth. While this can cause discomfort it is a short-term problem and thankfully there are a few solutions to heightening tooth sensitivity.

The most obvious answer is to avoid the intake of both hot and cold food and drink. As mentioned above most people tend to find that the high level of sensitivity in their teeth fades and disappears after roughly a week. Any longer than this and you should see your dentist.

You will also find it helpful to use a soft bristled toothbrush if you don’t already do so. The soft bristles cause less irritation to your teeth and gums and can therefore save you pain every time you brush your teeth. You should also use tepid water to moisten your toothbrush to avoid the sharp pain of sensitive teeth.

There are also a number of desensitizing gels and pastes on the market which you can apply to your teeth and gums. These cost around $20 and work by strengthening the enamel that surrounds your teeth. To apply a desensitizing paste all you need to do is squeeze out a blob onto your finger and a rub a coating around your teeth. Afterwards you will find your tooth sensitivity is greatly reduced or gone completely.

Remember that if you’re ever in any doubt about the sensitivity of your teeth you should always visit your dentist where they’ll be able to help you decide on treatment on a case by case basis.

Should You Brush Your Tongue?

In recent years you may have seen adverts featuring toothbrushes with rubber strips on the back to brush your tongue with. What does brushing your tongue do though and should you really brush your tongue?

Because your tongue contains a number of ridges and grooves and is both warm and moist it makes it a breeding ground for bacteria. This bacteria can lead to halitosis as well as even more serious infections. That is why you should brush your tongue tog et rid of this build up as it keeps your mouth healthy and your breath fresh.

To brush your tongue you will need either a toothbrush with a specifically designed strip on the back or a tongue cleaner. It is important not to use the regular bristles of a toothbrush as this can severely damage your taste buds.

Once you have the proper equipment all you have to do is scrub the cleaner against your tongue up and down, this will dislodge the bacteria. After you have done this you should then rinse with mouthwash to properly expel the bacteria.

Brushing your tongue can also have a positive effect on the whiteness of your teeth. By removing the bacteria from your mouth you stop it from getting on your teeth, which will eventually cause a yellow discoloration.

So remember to brush your tongue at least once a day.

Fix Gaps Between Teeth

While we typically focus on teeth whitening on this blog there are other cosmetic dental problems which cause embarrassment other than discolored teeth. One of the most common problems is gaps between teeth, especially the front two teeth. So, how do you fix gaps between teeth?

There are actually quite a few different of ways you can fix a gap between your teeth.

1. Braces.
2. Teeth Effect Bands.
3. Bonding.
4. Veneers.

Braces are probably the most commonly used method to fix gaps between teeth. They work by putting a small amount of stress on the jaw structure which results in a shift in the positioning of the problem teeth.

Teeth effect bands work in much the same way as braces, however they are much easier and less obtrusive to wear. Basically they are like a small elastic band that pull the two offending teeth together. They are predominantly used to fix small gaps between front teeth.

Bonding involves surrounding the teeth in a composite resin. As this makes the teeth wider it also fills up any gap there may have been.

Veneers are the most expensive option although they do have many benefits. As well as fixing gaps between teeth they can also make the teeth appear straighter and smoother then before.

It really depends on the size of the gap between your teeth as to which method is best to employ. This is something to discuss with your dentist. Typically the answer is either braces or bonding, this also depends on how quickly the patients wants to see results. Braces can take many months while bonding can be done in a single visit.

Fixing gaps between teeth is something that dentists do nearly every day so you can be completely confident in the experience and ability of your dentist.

Should You Whiten Your Teeth?

It seems that the teeth whitening industry is growing at a phenomenal rate. There are more and more dentists specialising in cosmetic dentistry, and a growing number of teeth whitening products. This is not really surprising given the many advantages that are associated with having whiter healthier looking teeth.

Physiologists generally agree that one of the factors we subconsciously look at when assessing the age of a person is the condition of their teeth. Generally teeth become more stained through use and age. Therefore a person with dull teeth is generally regarded as looking older than a person with fresh gleaming white teeth. Just whitening a persons’ teeth can literally take years off them. Looking younger obviously has many knock on benefits, such as improved job prospects.

A person with whiter teeth will also appear more attractive than if they had dull teeth. This is the reason why it is almost essential for models, TV presenters and actors to have teeth whitening. Looking more attractive will also obviously help you attract a new partner, or keep the partner you are already with!

A person with white teeth can also radiate more confidence. They can be confident in their smile, and how they look generally. This again can carry many benefits into other areas of their life. More confidence can help you to enjoy life more, and become more successful in almost everything that you do.

Whiter teeth can also help a person look healthier and more vibrant. A person may well observe someone with healthy white teeth and assume that they must also take care of other aspects of their health. Wouldn’t you have more confidence in a doctor that didn’t have brown rotting teeth?!

Despite the growing popularity of teeth whitening tips and products, there is still a lot of misinformation and unsafe or ineffective products. For example some people recommend that a person should swill hydrogen peroxide in their mouths to whiten their teeth. Whilst this will work, it can cause damage to the inside of the mouth, and can lead to increased risks of mouth cancer.

There are many products that will attempt to allow you to put hydrogen peroxide onto your teeth without it getting into contact with your mouth. They do this with the use of trays that are supposed to keep the fluid around the teeth and away from the mouth. However some products are more effective at achieving this than others.

So whilst there are many advantage to have healthy white teeth, you should keep it in perspective. If you use bad advance or dodgy products, then you can harm your health, and even cause further damage to your teeth. If you are in any doubts about any product or tip, then do your research. Asking for dental advice is probably your best, but there are also loads of book and other forms of information available, but make sure they come from reliable sources.

How Tooth Whitening Works

There are literally thousands of tooth whitening products out on the market, and it is estimated that in America alone 1.7 billion dollars is spend on such products. Somewhat surprisingly though most people who have their teeth whitening don’t even know how tooth whitening works. In this short article I will explain how tooth whitening works so that it no longer need remain a mystery.

Teeth have two layers to them. The surface of teeth is made of hard enamel, and inside is a layer of dentin. The dentin is the centre of each tooth while the enamel acts as a protective surface. Overtime though this protective enamel can be covered by a pellicle film. This film is typically caused by smoking, drinking coffee and any number of staining foods and drinks a person may consume.

The pellicle film can be removed by vigorous brushing or having a scale and polish at the dentist. However if it isn’t treated, or bits are missed it can begin to seep into the teeth. This is because enamel is porous meaning it can absorb substances inside it. If the pellicle film get absorbed then it causes deep staining to teeth. This isn’t harmful but it can appear unsightly.

Recently though tooth whitening has come to the forefront and it can be used to reverse the staining caused by the absorbed pellicle film. Tooth whitening products (when they’re home kits or those used by dentists) contain a certain amount of diluted bleach. This bleach is absorbed by the porous enamel and start an oxidation reaction which breaks down those deep stains that make teeth yellow. After this process is complete teeth return to their natural whiteness.

That is how tooth whitening works.

Bicarbonate of Soda Teeth Whitening

Bicarbonate of soda has long been touted as a great substance to use at home for teeth whitening. Some consider it to be an old wives’ tale but this isn’t entirely fair because it is actually true, you can use bicarbonate of soda to whiten your teeth. Not only does bicarb work for whitening teeth but it also cleans them too. Even now you can find toothpastes in the supermarket which use bicarbonate of soda to clean teeth rather than flouride.

Bicarb (also know as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda and bicarbonate of soda) is a white powder with a mildly salty taste. As well as teeth whitening, and obviously baking, bicarbonate of soda can also be used to help relieve the symptoms of heartburn and acid indigestion. The reason bicarbonate of soda can do all this because it neutralizes acids.

Bicarbonate of soda is actually a naturally occurring substance, it can be found in the earth and it is also produced by the human body. So it is one of the most natural ways you can whiten your teeth. However it is possible to cause damage by ingesting too much bicarb so if you do use it to clean and whiten your teeth please be careful not to swallow any.

How To Use Bicarbonate of Soda For Teeth Whitening

Get a small container and pour in a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.

Add a small amount of water and mix until it forms a smooth paste.

Use this bicarb paste just as you would a regular toothpaste.

After brushing rinse your mouth out with water. This removes excess bicarbonate of soda and also reduces the unpleasant taste.

That is all there is to it. It really is quite simple to use bicarbonate of soda for teeth whitening. As I mentioned before be careful not to swallow any, although the small amount you will be using will not be enough to cause any harm, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The bicarbonate of soda paste is slightly abrasive (meaning it can also remove stains from your teeth) and it is not recommend as something to use everyday. Instead you should limit brushing your teeth with bicarbonate of soda once or twice at most a week.

If you aren’t sure whether or not you should use bicarbonate of soda to whiten your teeth read the following post on Yahoo Answers - Does brushing your teeth with bicarbonate of soda (baking powder) actually take off the stains?

Cosmetic Teeth Straightening

On Whiter Teeth Whitening we regularly write about ways to whiten your teeth. Yet discoloured, yellow teeth aren’t the only cosmetic issue some people have with their teeth. Many people develop crooked teeth over the course of their adolescent and adult years. This can be due to changes in mouth structure, loss of a tooth or teeth, genetics, jaw alignment as well as other reasons.

As you can see there are many reasons a person may have crooked teeth. There are two main forms of cosmetic teeth straightening though that can fix crooked teeth. They fall into the categories of braces and veneers.

When some people think of braces their mind immediately goes to the massive headgear style of corrective braces that look like something straight out of a horror movie. Nowadays though braces are much more small and discreet. In fact Invisalign braces are virtually unnoticeable unless you are really looking hard.

Braces work by putting a certain amount of pressure on the teeth. Over time this pressure leads to the teeth loosening (only slightly), the bone of the jaw then has room grow and support the teeth in their new, straight position. Depending on how crooked your teeth are this process can take anywhere from one to two years to complete before the braces can be removed.

As I mentioned earlier there is another method of cosmetic teeth straightening and that is veneers. Veneers do not actually straighten the teeth but they create a “mask” so that your teeth look perfectly straight. You can have your teeth straightened in this manner in a matter of a couple of visits to the dentist. Veneers also have an added benefit that they will make your teeth appear whiter since they cover the teeth. However they are costly and cannot correct or cover severely crooked teeth.

So which method of cosmetic teeth straightening is better, braces or veneers? Well that all depends on a person’s situation. Typically celebrities choose veneers as they are a quick fix and they have to look their best at all times. Famously Miley Cyrus had veneers fitted to make her teeth appear both straighter and whiter.

For most people though braces are the best answer. They offer a long term solution for crooked teeth at a fraction of the cost of veneers.

Are Electric Toothbrushes Better Than Manual?

It can be confusing when thinking about which type of toothbrush to use. Some people will swear that the modern electric toothbrushes out perform the old manual toothbrushes. Others will say that the oldies are still the best. Which is right? Let’s take a good look.

First we must consider what it is that we expect from a toothbrush. Largely we expect them to remove plaque from our teeth. They are also expected to stimulate the gums.

Although most toothbrushes do an effective job, research indicates that electric toothbrushes with bristles that rotate together in one direction, and then switch and rotate in the opposite direction seem to be more effective than manual brushes and other electric brushes that spin in only one direction. So if you do go for an electronic toothbrush, a model with rotating-oscillating bristles is probably your best option.

The cheaper models will still do an effective job. But you may need to move them around a little more in order to reach the more difficult to get at areas.

The effectiveness of these cheaper models then depends to some degree on how good your brush technique is.

There are also many advantage to a manual toothbrush. For instance they are cheaper and less complicated. Being complicated means that there is less to go wrong. The batteries won’t decide to pack in just before you are due to set off to work. The circuitry will not fail either.

A manual brush also puts less pressure on your teeth and gums. With a manual brush you can more easily feel the pressure you are applying. You can put too much pressure on your teeth and gums with an electric toothbrush, without even realising it. This can contribute to wear of your tooth enamel, causing pain, sensitivity, and an increased risk of tooth decay.

So rather than being a question of which is the best option, it is more a question of which is best for you. For example the elderly and disabled are usually better suited with an electric toothbrush if they have problems with their manual dexterity. Or if you don’t particularly have good brushing technique, then an electric is probably best for you – especially one with rotating-oscillating bristles. If you are happy with your teeth and brushing technique, then maybe you are best with a manual. However if you haven’t already, then it may be worth you experimenting with an electric to see which one you prefer.

You may love the feel of an electric toothbrush bussing around your mouth, cleaning and probing – or you may hate it. The Academy of General Dentistry believe that the best toothbrush that you can buy is the one that you will actually use – as simple as that. While both electric and manual toothbrushes have some pros and cons, the most important thing is which one you will actually use.

Which ever brush you choose to use, remember to brush regularly, at least twice and day for two minutes each time, and to cover all the areas of you teeth. Keep smiling!

Cleaning Teeth With Salt

We have discussed many different home remedies for teeth whitening in the past here on Whiter Teeth Whitening. While salt has been mentioned in passing we’ve yet to discuss it in depth…until now. The question is, can you clean your teeth with salt? If so will salt make your teeth any whiter?

You can in fact clean your teeth with salt. The best salt to use for cleaning your teeth is table salt as this is smoother, sea salt is rough and can more easily damage the enamel of your teeth. To do this all you have to do is pour a small amount of table salt on your toothbrush, and wet it a little as you would with toothpaste. Then brush your teeth normally. After you have thoroughly brushed your teeth with salt you should then rinse off your toothbrush and brush your teeth only using water. Then rinse your mouth out with mouthwash.

When you have done this, take a look at your teeth in the mirror. You should be able to notice a definite whitening effect on your teeth. They may also appear more shiny. Be careful though as overuse of this method can damage your teeth and gums, so only brush your teeth with salt once a week.

One further advantage of brushing your teeth with salt is that it can also help fight against toothaches as I have written about in Home Remedies For Toothache. Salt drains the fluid in your gums and kills harmful bacteria.

There you have it. It is beneficial to use salt to clean your teeth but it shouldn’t replace your regular toothpaste and it isn’t something you should do everyday or you risk damaging your tooth enamel. Instead it’s better to clean your teeth with salt about once a week, it will help make your teeth look whiter and prevent toothaches.

Home Remedies For Toothache

If you’ve ever suffered from toothache then you know how painful and discomforting it can be. It can become so severe as to distract you from being able to do anything. Thankfully there are a number of ways to help avoid toothache before it even begins and even more helpful home remedies to relieve the pain.

The Best Home Remedies For Toothache

The first thing you should do if you have toothache is to take a painkiller or aspirin. For minor toothaches this could very well be enough to relieve the pain.

Garlic is a natural anaesthetic that you can use to relieve you of the pain caused by a toothache. What you an do is mash a clove of garlic into a paste and then brush it gently into the effected area. You can also mix in salt into the paste to create a very effective home remedy that both kills bacteria as well as the pain associated with a toothache.

If you don’t like the taste of garlic then you could just mix a teaspoon of salt into a glass of water. Then swill it around your mouth (as if it were mouthwash), especially concentrating on the area of the toothache, and spit it out after 30 seconds or so. The salt will kill the harmful bacteria in your mouth and draws out any bad fluid in the gums.

Ways To Avoid Toothache

If you are prone to toothaches then there are a few things you can do to lessen the chance of toothache occurring. A strong preventive action could stop you getting toothaches altogether.

Increase your intake of vegetables and dairy. These are important nutritional requirements for healthy teeth.

Eliminate sugary food and drinks from your diet.

Brush regularly with a soft bristled toothbrush. This will avoid aggravating the nerves in your gums.

Floss carefully and rinse with non alcohol mouthwash.

Take regular exercise. Certain heart conditions can actually refer the pain to your teeth.

If you smoke or chew tobacco commit yourself to quitting. If you need help try the Stop Smoking Hypnosis MP3 over at HypnoBusters which has helped many people quit smoking permanently.

If you’d like a comprehensive guide to toothache (including a guaranteed 12 hour cure!) then visit the 12 Hour Toothache Cure website which has produced a must-have eBook for anyone who suffers from the pain of toothache.

The 12 Hour Toothache Cure

Keeping Your Teeth Strong

Having perfect white teeth is of little use if they are weak, weak teeth cause pain and discomfort. Similarly a well trained cosmetic dentist will not agree to whiten your teeth if they are too damaged and weakened. That is why it is vital to keep your teeth strong and healthy, and in this article we are going to look at ways you can do just that.

The first thing you need to do to keep your teeth strong is to develop a good dental hygiene routine. This means brushing your teeth at two to three times a day (especially the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night), using mouthwash after brushing and flossing carefully after meals. Also when you brush it is important to make sure you brush the front, back and ends of your teeth.

Secondly you need to watch what you eat and drink. The two main causes of damaged teeth are sugar and acid. Sugar causes plaque which leads to a slow decay. Acid causes a much faster erosion. Sugar is obviously found in sweet food and drinks, while acid is most commonly found in sharp fruits and their juices such as apples, oranges and limes. Carrots on the other hand are great for teeth as they clear plaque off of the enamel. Similarly water is the best thing you can drink as it washes away plaque and doesn’t stain your teeth like many unnatural drinks.

On the subject of diet is also advisable to take a multi vitamin and mineral tablet. Teeth in particular require vitamins and minerals to stay strong such as vitamin C, magnesium and calcium. If you don’t want to take a tablet you can get these vitamins and minerals from dairy products and fruit (especially bananas).

If you grind your teeth (which you may not even be aware of if you do so while asleep) this can weaken your teeth greatly. There are a number of ways to stop or at least alleviate teeth grinding. For example some people wear a gumshield, the sort a boxer wears, while sleeping. One more unusual yet effective way of stopping teeth grinding is hypnosis. You can even get a teeth grinding hypnosis mp3 that you can listen to before you go to sleep which will retune your mind to stop the habit.

Lastly you should visit a dentist regularly for a check-up. A dentist will be able to spot any problems before they become serious and advise you how to treat them. While dentists may seem expensive at times think of how miserable your life would be with painfully weak teeth. A regular check-up is well worth the money.

Fluoride Therapy

Fluoride therapy is commonly practiced and it is widely accepted by the dental profession as being very helpful for combating tooth decay.

Fluoride promotes the remineralization of teeth, by enhancing the tooth remineralization process. Fluoride found in saliva will absorb into the surface of a tooth where demineralization has occurred. The presence of this fluoride in turn attracts other minerals, such as calcium, which results in the formation of new tooth mineral.

Fluoride can make the teeth more resistant to the formation of tooth decay. The new tooth mineral that is created by the remineralization process is a harder mineral compound than what existed when the tooth was initially formed.

Teeth are generally composed of hydroxyapatite and carbonated hydroxyapatite. Fluorapatite is created during the remineralization process when fluoride is present and this is more resistant to acid erosion.

Fluoride can also reduce the ability of the bacteria in the mouth to create more acids. Fluoride decreases the rate at which the bacteria that live in plaque can produce acid, by disrupting the bacteria and its ability to metabolize sugars. The less sugar the bacteria can consume, the less acidic waste will be produced, and less will contribute to the demineralization process.

Experts generally agree that the best way to prevent tooth decay is to use several sources of fluoride. Fluoride is found naturally in water in small but traceable amounts, and in certain foods such as meat, fish, eggs and tea. So eating more of these types of food will help.

There are many different types of fluoride therapies, which include home therapies and professionally applied topical fluorides. All these fluoride therapies are categorized by application – dentifrices, mouth rinses, gels and foams, varnishes, dietary fluoride supplements, and water fluoridation.

However be warned. Most substances, even beneficial ones such as vitamins, are detrimental when taken in extreme doses. High concentrations of fluoride can cause fluoride poisoning, which when taken to extremes can cause death. However this is highly unlikely unless you take things to absolute extremes. A toxic dose of fluoride for an 8 year old child is around 600-700 milligram. Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste may expose them to around 0.30 milligrams – and that’s assuming that they swallow all of it. Probably the only real danger is when using fluoride tablets, as they can be available in relatively high doses. If you are in any doubt, then consult a dentist or doctor.

High levels of fluoride are also known to cause Dental fluorosis. This is a health condition caused by a child receiving too much fluoride during tooth development. Children over the age of 8 years are thought not to be at risk. In its mildest form, which is the most common, fluorosis appears as tiny white streaks or specks that are often unnoticeable. In its severe form it is characterized by black and brown stains, as well as cracking and pitting of the teeth.

So always use reputable products, and preferably check with your dentist before undergoing any treatments. Fluoride can greatly benefit your teeth, but must be used with some care in order to avoid the small but present risk of over dosing.

Whiter Than White Product Review

This product promises to make teeth up to eight shades whiter over time.

You take an impression of your teeth in a special putty mould that is provided, and send this to their dental lab where they will make you a customised dental tray. This is an important extra that almost all other kits don’t provide. This will help you get a good fit, and prevent the bleaching formula leaking into your mouth, which can cause blistering and sensitivity.

The whitening gel is available in strong (20 pc carbamide peroxide) or sensitive (11 pc carbamide peroxide) formulas. It is placed in the tray and worn for 40 to 60 minutes twice a day. If you are careful when making your teeth impression, they should fit neatly and none of the bleach should leak into your mouth.

The pH of the whitening product is less acidic than most, so it is better for the teeth as acid can erode the teeth’s enamel over time.

This kit also contains relatively high levels of carbamide peroxide for a home kit, so you should get a noticeable amount of whitening.

So this is a better buy than most home whitening kits. It is safer due to the customized tray option, and the whitening product should actually work. This about as good an alternative to going to the dentists as you are likely to get, and is around a quarter of the price. In fact many dentists already supply this product. They also offer a ‘no quibble guarantee’ allowing you to return the product within 30 days for a full refund if you are not satisfied with the results.

The Whiter Than White two-step programme is available for £99. Some are lucky are seem to have a perfect smile naturally but for those who aren’t so fortunate there is a treatment that can help and it’s called teeth whitening.

There are many reasons why someone’s teeth may be stained and/or discolored. It could be the result of certain medications or an excessive intake of fluoride (fluoride may not be as healthy for teeth as first thought). However the most common cause of stained and discoloured teeth is the people’s everyday diet. Tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, alcohol and curry all stain teeth, and smoking may be the worst of all. That is why many people require teeth whitening.

How teeth whitening works actually depends on the method used, of which there are several. I will list these below and rundown how they each work.

Whitening Toothpaste: While they are called “whitening” toothpastes they don’t in reality whiten your teeth. What they do is remove stains which can lead to discoloration. Best used to maintain already white teeth.

Home Teeth Whitening Remedies: These could be split into mini categories too, but for the sake of quickness the way these tend to work are through acidic abrasion. Strawberries, lemons, etc will all cause damage to the enamel of your teeth in the long term so avoid using these. The safest of these that will whiten your teeth is baking soda. Click the link to find out more.

Teeth Whitening Strips: Strips contain a bleaching agent which is placed over the teeth for a certain period of time. When removed you should notice a small effect, with repeated use the results grow greater.

Brush On Teeth Whitening Gel: As the name implies you brush this whitening gel onto your teeth. Immediately your teeth will look whiter, it also contains whitening bleach so over time your teeth will begin to look whiter even without the brush on gel being applied.

Teeth Whitening Laser Treatment: This is done by a cosmetic dentist. While very effective it is also extremely costly. Basically you have a tray of bleach fitted around your teeth which are then lasered to activate the bleach. It takes two or three sessions for the results to show.

Home Teeth Whitening Kits: These use the same bleach found in laser treatment, only without the laser. This means that the treatment has similar results but it takes much longer for an improvement, typically a couple of months. Most dentists will also offer this treatment.

There you have it. Nearly all the methods of teeth whitening and how they work. If you’d like to learn more you can always discuss teeth whitening with your dentist or search here on Whiter Teeth Whitening for more information.

Is White or Red Wine Worse for Teeth?

Unfortunately the regular enjoyment of a glass or two of wine can damage your teeth. Recent Nutritional Research indicates that white wines actually erode the enamel more than darker wines. This is because white wines tend to be more acidic than red. Generally the higher the acid content of a food or drink, the greater the potential damage to the teeth’s enamel.

However this will leave wine drinkers who want to keep their pearly whites white, in a bit of a quandary. The paler wines may well cause greater enamel erosion over time, but the darker wines stain more. So they are both as bad as each other for different reasons. White damages more, red stains more. What are we supposed to do, give it all up completely?!

Don’t worry; you don’t have to go completely without in order to keep your teeth healthy and white, and you don’t have to go to the length of pouring the wine directly down your throat either, although it would help!

If you can bare it, brushing your teeth before drinking can really help. This helps remove plaque and debris on the teeth that contribute to catching the staining wine. The wine can cling onto the sticky plaque, causing far greater staining. A smoother, cleaner tooth will stain less easily. Of course it could impair the taste of the wine. As we all probably know, things taste rather different immediately after brushing. To minimise this, you could brush about an hour before drinking, and use just a small amount of toothpaste.

You can also brush your teeth after drinking. However be warned, brushing your teeth straight after drinking can make matters worse. The acid levels will be high in your mouth, which makes the enamel soft. This renders it more prone to damage caused by brushing. It is better to leave it for about half an hour, and rinse the mouth out with water before brushing. This should ensure that the acid levels are fairly normal, and little enamel damage will be caused by brushing.

A great source of comfort for many, the researchers commented that the tradition of combining wine and cheese can be a good thing. That’s right, eating cheese with your wine is good – at least for your teeth. This is because cheese contains high levels of calcium, which neutralise and boost the remineralising power of saliva to halt acid attack. So cheese and wine nights are definitely on!

In fact consuming most foods with wine can help, unless they are particularly acidic like strawberries. A good meal with a glass or two can increase your saliva levels, which helps to neutralise the acid in your mouth, limiting the erosive potential of the wine. And really, is there any better way to enjoy your wine, than with a good hearty meal?

Researchers at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Germany also found that rich red wines like Rioja or a Pinot noir proved kinder to the teeth, as they have lower acid levels.

Also how you drink your wine can make a real difference. Some people don’t realise it, but they drink through their teeth. Just try drinking something now, and be mindful of whether the liquid is drank through your teeth, or whether you pour it into your mouth, directly on your tongue. If you do drink through your teeth, then you are far more prone to staining and damaging your teeth with wine. Get into the habit of pouring the wine, and indeed any drink, into your mouth without contact with your teeth. If you keep reminding yourself, you will quickly get into the habit of doing this without thinking. It just takes a few days effort, but the rewards are definitely worth it.

You can still enjoy your wine and have great looking teeth. Just by making a few changes, such as brushing before and/or after, and eating cheese or other foods, can really help. Life isn’t supposed to be dull and boring, and it needn’t be. It can be interesting, bright and dazzling, just like your teeth!

Free Teeth Whitening Recipe

While it less expensive then ever to whiten your teeth thanks to home kits, even these come at a cost. They range from $50 to $150 and most kits require you to use them twice a year. In the current economy this is a lot of money to be spending on a purely cosmetic treatment. That is why we at Whiter Teeth Whitening have come up with this teeth whitening recipe that you can make very inexpensively at home.

We came up with this free teeth whitening recipe by mixing together many of the substances you can find at home that are known to holding whitening qualities.

You will only need three ingredients, baking soda, 3% strength hydrogen peroxide and peppermint oil. The peppermint oil is purely for flavor, the active ingredients are the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Get a small bowl and place in a teaspoon of baking soda and then add two or three drops of hydrogen peroxide. Mix these together with a drop of peppermint oil to create a whitening paste. You can then used just like normal toothpaste. Brush your teeth thoroughly with it and then avoid eating for drinking for the next 30 minutes. This gives enough time for the paste to take effect. After 30 minutes brush your teeth again with regular toothpaste and rise out with mouthwash.

Because baking soda is abrasive you should only use this teeth whitening recipe once a week. The baking soda is important though as it removes stains from your teeth. The hydrogen peroxide bleaches your teeth so they are visibly whiter.

Try it today and after just a few weeks you will begin to notice an improvement in the whiteness of your teeth. Best of all it costs less than a dollar to make and you probably have the ingredients in your home right now.

Tooth Soap and its Teeth Whitening Effect

Many people are starting to turn their backs on toothpaste and are going for the latest alternative on the market tooth soap. Why is this though and what exactly is tooth soap?

The main problem with toothpaste is two of the chemicals most makes typically contain, glycerin and silica. Glycerin coats your teeth and this is believed to prevent your teeth from being to re-mineralize. Other the years this leads to cavities and a yellowing of the teeth. The silica isn’t much better as it can scratch the enamel of your teeth making small cracks that attract bacteria and can cause decay along with further yellowing problems.

Tooth soap comes in two varieties, shreds and liquid but they are both do the same job in the same way. The name “tooth soap” more or less describes what the product is. It’s a naturally made organic soap that is flavored so that it doesn’t leave a soapy taste in your mouth.

You use tooth soap in much the same way as you do toothpaste but since it doesn’t contain any unnatural chemicals such as glycerin and silica it allows your teeth to re-mineralize without scratching or damaging them. This means whiter, healthier teeth and less trips to the dentist. Those who use tooth soap claim that there teeth not only become healthier but they actually feel cleaner too.

Tooth soap is considerably more expensive than toothpaste and this puts many people off trying it. However when you consider how much money and pain this can save you on trips to the dentist though it all pays off in the long run.

A common question is, “can’t I just use regular soap?”. The answer is no! Regular soap contains many chemicals that really wouldn’t be healthy to ingest, plus most soap would taste awful. Your mother didn’t threaten to “wash your mouth out with soap” as a reward, did she? Tooth soap on the other hand is organically made meaning no nasty chemicals and comes is a wide variety of flavors including mint, grape, chocolate fudge, cherry, passion fruit and more.

95% never turn back to toothpaste after using tooth soap which is a good indicator of its success. Professional teeth whitening can cost upwards of $500 and is this economy that is a lot of money to be spending on what is a visually pleasing but unessential treatment. Surely there must be a more affordable method of teeth whitening?

Fortunately there is an alternative to professional teeth whitening that offers similar results at a fraction of the price.

Home whitening kits can be ordered online or bought at most cosmetic shops. For one home whitening kit you can expect to spend around $100. Stack this up against the $500+ that a professional whitening cost and you can see that this is clearly a much more affordable alternative.

If you’ve never purchased a whitening kit before then you needn’t worry. As well as being affordable they are also very easy to use. Most kits come with a gel and mouth tray, you simply put the gel in the mouth tray and then place the tray on your teeth. You leave the tray on while you sleep and after repeat applications you will see a very noticeable improvement in the whiteness of your teeth.

There are also a couple of home based methods you can use that cost very little money and will make your teeth whiter. They won’t make as much difference as a whitening kit but they’re even more affordable.

The first is to brush your teeth with baking soda once every couple of weeks. Baking soda dissolves stains on your teeth, making them appear clean and white. The other method is to mix a solution of 90% water and 10% bleach, this makes a safe homemade teeth bleach, again this should be done once every two weeks. Both of these methods are entirely safe as long as you restrict yourself to using them only twice a month, otherwise they can cause damage to the enamel of your teeth. They are extremely cost effective methods, and while the results aren’t as powerful as whitening kits they are the most affordable way to whiten your teeth.
